ENLIGHT – ICU reporting checklist

Clinical trials
Observational studies

The ENLIGHT- ICU reporting checklist provides guidance for reporting lighting conditions and lighting-based interventions in adult intensive care unit (ICU) research investigating the non-visual effects of light. Paediatric and neonatal intensive care settings are outside the scope of the current guideline. Currently, no ICU-specific reporting framework exists, and lighting is inconsistently reported, limiting the ability to compare studies, synthesise evidence, and reproduce findings on the effects of light on patient and clinician outcomes (Linders et al., 2026). This guideline extends the ENLIGHT checklist, which was originally developed for reporting light-based interventions investigating the non-visual effects of light in laboratory-based human studies (Spitschan et al., 2023). The ENLIGHT-ICU extension will be adapt the existing framework to the adult ICU context by accounting for logistical, patient-, clinician-, and environment-related considerations, such as the feasibility of measurements and implementation in the complex ICU environment. This will support research examining the effects of lighting on patients and clinicians by improving transparency, reprodutcability, and comparability across ICU lighting studies.
