Introduction: The Reporting Recommendations for Tumor Marker Prognostic Studies (REMARK) guideline, published in 2005, was designed to promote complete and transparent reporting of studies evaluating the prognostic value of tumour markers. Although originally developed for oncology, its principles apply widely to prognostic factor research across medicine. To support broader use and improve reporting quality, we are updating the guidance and expanding its scope. To align more closely with other prognosis-related reporting guidelines and make it easier for researchers to identify and adopt, the updated guideline will join the Transparent Reporting Items of Studies for Prognosis and Diagnosis (TRIPOD) family and will be known as TRIPOD-PF. This protocol outlines the processes and methods that will guide its development.
Methods and Analysis: TRIPOD-PF will be developed in line with EQUATOR Network guidance and will follow five stages. First, a steering group with expertise in prognostic research will draft a list of potential reporting items, informed by systematic reviews of prognostic factor studies and existing reporting guidelines. Second, we will conduct an international Delphi survey with a diverse group of stakeholders to gather views on which items should be considered. Third, we will hold a consensus meeting with the steering group and other experts to refine, consolidate, and agree the key items for inclusion. Fourth, we will finalise the TRIPOD-PF checklist, pilot test it, and prepare the accompanying explanation and elaboration document. Finally, we will disseminate TRIPOD-PF through journals, conferences, websites, blogs, and social media. The guideline aims to strengthen reporting standards for diagnostic and prognostic factor studies across clinical fields.
